The Humane Society of Navarro County is the recipient of a privately funded grant to spay and neuter companion dogs at little or no cost to pet owners who cannot afford this surgery. The Humane Society is dedicated to reducing animal overpopulation and abandonment in Navarro County through spay/neuter initiatives, public education in responsible pet ownership and placement of adoptable pets in appropriate homes. Preventing unwanted litters translates to healthier pets, happier owners and lower euthanasia rates at shelters.
Large and small dogs are eligible for this grant. The spay/neuter of large dogs is emphasized and encouraged for several reasons: Large dogs have more puppies when they produce litters; large dogs flood the shelters; large dogs are more expensive to feed and care for, and large dogs are more expensive to spay or neuter. The Humane Society is authorized to extend this opportunity to citizens of Navarro County and neighboring counties. Assistance is limited to 5 dogs per household.
To qualify for this spay/neuter program, a dog must be an owned pet. This grant will not provide funding for any dog purchased from a breeder, adopted from a shelter, currently fostered or homed at a rescue facility. The donor of this grant insists that a shelter dog should be spayed or neutered before it is adopted to an individual or family and that a fostered or rescued dog should be neutered before placement in a temporary home.
This grant is designed to help people who cannot afford the full cost of spay/neuter surgery for their pets. This grant is offered on a first come, first served basis. Funds are available now. To apply for assistance, please call the HSNC office at 903-875-1060 or come by the office in the west end of the Today Homes warehouse directly behind Skinny's at W. 7th Ave and 20th Street any week day from 10 to 2. Applications may be filled out online from our website at www.thehsnc.org or turned in at the office or faxed to 903-875-1063. The application process is quick and easy. Leave a message for a call back . One application is required for each dog.
The tremendous success of the HSNC spay/neuter program is ensured through the cooperation of our local veterinarians. HSNC spent $35,000 on spay/neuter funding in 2010 and is on track to exceed that figure in 2011. The HSNC currently has no grant to cover the spay/neuter of cats; however, limited funds are available for cats through the generosity of concerned citizens.
